Biography

Technical Experience
Alan has considerable experience of the civil engineering and building industries having graduated in 1971, elected a Fellow of ICE in 2002 and now operates as a consultant geotechnical engineer. He has been a major contributor to two landfill industry codes of practice for the Environment Agency (Geosynthetic Interface Shear Resistance Testing and Earthworks in Landfill Engineering). Since 2012 he has presented the Advanced Landfill Engineering course developed specifically for Environment Agency staff. Alan also presents courses (in collaboration with Equipe training) on Foundation Design, Slope Design and Earthworks Design and Construction.
Alan has detailed knowledge and extensive experience of the geotechnical issues relating to the analysis, design, specification and construction of building and civil engineering works for:
• Residential and commercial developments
• Highways
• Railways
• Landfills
Specifically, the geotechnical aspects of:
• Slope stability, Excavations, Embankments
• Earthworks, Foundations, Retaining walls
Recent Expert Witness Experience
For Walker Plant (Earthmoving) Ltd - 2009
Opinion was given regarding surface water drainage measures and settlement lagoons used during construction of a site and the split of responsibilities between the parties to the contract in litigation brought by EA for silt pollution of surface water features.
For Hinton Perry and Davenhill Ltd - 2017
Alan was appointed as the geotechnical expert to advise the freeholder of Ketley Quarry in their dispute with the holders of the lease. Alan was retained to give advice on whether or not the landfilling was compliant with the
