About the Association

In 2003, a small group of solicitors came together to see how they could assist members of the public who had no obvious focal point to obtain help if they were in dispute with a professional, and were looking for a specialist to enable them resolve the problem.
As a result, The Professional Negligence Lawyers’ Association (PNLA) was formed in August 2004 to address this with the aim that both claimants and professionals would utilise the PNLA as the standard point of reference when issues of professional negligence are encountered.
The current management team comprises Katy Manley of Manley Turnbull from Cheltenham as President, Andrea Cohen of ARC Risk and Compliance in Manchester as Chief Executive and Kay Bethencourt as Operations Manager also from Cheltenham. Unfortunately, Nigel Mallett, the original Chief Executive passed away suddenly and unexpectedly in May 2016.
The PNLA acts as a focus for clients who are in need of lawyers who specialise in professional negligence and directs those clients to the appropriate specialists. Other benefits include:-

• The provision of training courses and seminars
• A website giving details of the members and their specialisations
• An Annual Conference
• A Lender Claims Group
• Newsletters from time to time
• PNLA email group
• PNLA ATE Scheme
• A voice with key stakeholders
• Opportunities to contribute to lobbying and communications initiatives to help members and to inform the wider community about the profession
• Access to a network of peers across the business community

The objects for which the PNLA has been established are as follows:-

• To promote specialist dispute resolution skills in acting for claimants (individuals and organisations) in disputes between them and their professional advisors arising because of negligent or inadequate service;

• To provide a network for the exchange of information among members of the PNLA;

• To promote and encourage education and training in professional negligence dispute resolution; and

• To develop a public voice of claimant professional negligence dispute resolution with a media profile and a lobbying capacity.
